The most prevalent complication of HMB is iron deficiency anaemia,9 as menstruation is the most common cause of anaemia in premenopausal women.3 Indeed, for some patients, a diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia can be the prompt for HMB identification.5 

Common symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia include3:

  • Fatigue
  • Breathlessness
  • Headache
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Cognitive dysfunction.

Other iron deficiency anaemia symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Pale skin
  • Dry damaged hair and moderate alopecia
  • Irritability
  • Palpitations
  • Itching
  • Sore tongue
  • Tinnitus
  • Abnormal cravings for ice or dirt
  • Changes in the nails, such as becoming spoon shaped or having long ridges.
