The Importance of Regular Cervical Screening
In this blog we’ll talk to you about something super important: cervical screening. I know it might not be the most exciting topic, but trust me, it’s something you need to know about!
First off, let's get the basics out of the way. Cervical screening, often known as a smear test, is a simple test that checks the health of your cervix. It's a quick and relatively painless in most people and is used to help prevent cancer.
You might be thinking, "Why do I need to do this? I feel fine!" Well, here's the thing, cervical cancer often doesn't show symptoms in its early stages. Regular screening can detect abnormal cells before they turn into cancer. It's all about prevention and catching any issues early can mean simpler and more effective treatment.
I get it, the thought of going to the doctor for this procedure can be a bit intimidating. But trust me, it's worth it. The screening is usually done by a female nurse or doctor and the whole process usually takes less than 10 minutes , the peace of mind it brings is priceless. Plus, your health is worth a lot more than a few minutes of discomfort.
You’ll be sent an invitation letter in the post when it’s time to book your appointment. If you're between 25 and 64, you should be getting screened regularly—every three years to five years, depending on your age. If you missed your last screening appointment or didn’t book one after you received a letter, you should contact your GP or local sexual health clinic to book now.
So, when is the best time to book the appointment? It’s best to have a cervical screening when you’re not on your period (avoid 2 days before or after your period), and if you are having treatment for unusual vaginal discharge or a pelvic infection, then you should wait until your treatment has finished.
It's just one of those things you have to put on your calendar and do, like a dental check-up or an MOT for your car. Try not to be embarrassed when talking to the nurse or doctor as they’re trained to provide support and make you feel comfortable, so make sure you ask any questions that you have!
Remember, taking care of yourself is a form of self-love. You're important, and so is your health. So, if you skipped your last cervical screening, why not book an appointment today? Trust me, your future self will thank you.
